Section 48:4-H CLUB

4-H Youth programs are non-formal voluntary educational programs under the supervision of the Cooperative Extension Service of the University of California and the United States Department of Agriculture. They are a part of extension teaching. The projects exhibited at fairs by members of these groups are the results of their efforts under the supervision of volunteer adults.

LOCAL RULES AND REGULATIONS

  1. The general rules and health rules applicable to the Senior Department apply also to the Junior Department.
  2. Only boys and girls who are regularly enrolled in Mendocino and Lake Counties 4-H Club and those enrolled in the Cloverdale 4-H Club, who are members in good standing, may exhibit in the various classes.
  3. All entries must be properly made on official entry blanks furnished by the Fair Association. All entries, including out-of-county 4-H entries must be signed by the 4-H Community Leader of the 4-H club to which the member belongs, or by that leader's DESIGNATED representative. 4-H clubs may, at their option, require the member's project leader to sign each entry form IN ADDITION to the Community Leader. See State Rule Section VII, Rules 8 and 19.
  4. Completed official entry forms must be in the hands of fair management no later than Friday, August 15, 2008, at 5:00 p.m. for all 4-H divisions except Feature Booths and Livestock (includes Poultry and Rabbit).
  5. Exhibits MUST BE in place by 10:00 p.m., Thursday, September 11,2008, 2008.
  6. Each 4-H club member must submit to his local club leader, for his or her approval, an up-to-date record book of the show project on standard record books used for this purpose.
  7. Exhibits made as a part of a school course for credit may not be considered as part of a 4-H project.
  8. The Fair Management reserves the right to cancel all premiums of any exhibitor for any violation of the rules, or for any misconduct of any kind while on the fairgrounds.
  9. Exhibitors must secure their EXHIBITOR NUMBER from their community leader and enter it on the ENTRY FORM before filing the form with the fair.
  10. SUBMIT a separate entry form for EACH DIVISION.
  11. ENTRY NUMBER and EXHIBITORS TAGS: The number stamped on each exhibitor tag will be used as the identifying number for judging exhibits.
  12. All entries must be properly made on the official entry forms furnished by the Fair and must be signed by a vocational agricultural instructor, indicating chapter represented.

DANISH SYSTEM OF JUDGING

The Danish System of Judging is based on established standards of quality for each type of product. In this system each exhibit is judged according to how well it meets that standard rather than how it compares with other exhibits. In all Junior Departments using the Danish System THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES SHALL BE USED BY JUDGES: JUDGING SCALE - DANISH SYSTEM
Group 1 - Superior 92% - 100% Blue
Group 2 - Good 84% - 91% Red
Group 3 - Average 70% - 83% White
Group 4 - Poor, undesirable 69% or Less No Ribbon

INSTRUCTIONS TO EXHIBITORS ON 4-H YOUTH PROJECTS

  1. All entries in the following divisions must have been made, collected, grown or prepared and entered by exhibitors who were enrolled in those projects in 4-H Youth Programs within one year of the opening date of the Fair, except as otherwise noted.
  2. All entries must have been made, collected or prepared by the exhibitor in accordance with the requirements or recommendations of that project program. Entries that require packaging and labeling, such as Food Preservation and Entomology, must be done in accordance with directions and recipes in project manuals and outlines. Check carefully the recommendations for size and kind of container, and method of labeling. Only standard containers specifically designed for that purpose would be accepted.
  3. The quality desired in agriculture and horticulture product exhibits is the quality that brings the best financial return in the commercial market, and such exhibits must be at least equal in maturity as that state of ripeness required by Section 41513 of California Agriculture Code in order to be considered for premium awards.
  4. VARIETY OF PRODUCTS MUST BE ADEQUATELY AND CORRECTLY LABELED
  5. NOTE: Unless otherwise stated, the type of vegetable desired for exhibits will be the uniform commercial grade rather than overgrown. Monstrosities will not be considered for premium awards.
  6. NOTE: The number of vegetables to exhibit and manner of exhibiting is described in "How to Prepare Vegetables for 4-H Exhibits" issued by Agricultural Extension Service, University of California. The Score Card that may be used for judging is in this leaflet.
  7. LIMIT: 15 different exhibits, only one per each type. Each exhibit must be listed separately on entry form by species and type (e.g., Beans, snap, green; Tomatoes, Pearson; Lettuce, leaf, etc.)
  8. NOTE: Primary members are not eligible for Best of Division.
  9. Each exhibit must be labeled as to species and type.
